All-Night:
Use this phrase if you want to take a lady out, or away, from the bar/club where she usually works. This applies to bar girls, go-go dancers, and waitresses. Her time will be ‘yours’ until the morning. She may decide to have dinner with you, or go to a disco. Now is not the time to be reticent, spell out clearly and simply what you want. If you hate listening to caterwauling along to karaoke songs, and plan an early night, then make this very clear BEFORE leaving the bar/club.

Bar Fine:
This refers to the cash you will need to pay the bar/club owner before you may remove the young lady from her employment. It is intended to recompense the owner for a lost worker. Usually you will be offered "short time" (probably an hour or so) or "all night". You can expect to pay up to 700 baht, with the price being higher on places such as Soi Cowboy and Long Gun. This fee does not include any cash for the lady. You will usually deal with "mama-san" who knows who is available and for how long. You will have to pay whatever the lady deems fit for her company, and it can be anything up to 3000 baht.

Beer Bars:
These are open air bars selling mostly Beer, with Thai girls serving beer and drinks. These type of bars are often on the beach, and are made of a type of thatch, with a wooden structure. They are designed to look native and rustic. But beware, these people are usually very business savvy.

Boys in Brown:
This refers to the Thai police force. More specifically to those who have financial arrangements with bar owners. A good guide to when the boys in brown are expected is that the dancers will be well covered in anticipation of their arrival.

The Issan:
This is the north-east area of Thailand, which borders onto Laos. Many Bangkok and Pattaya bar girls come from this impoverished agricultural region, looking to make their fortune, or simply to support an often very large extended family. People from this region generally have darker skin, a trait which is usually appreciated by foreigners but not by most Thai men.

Farang Kee Nok:
By now you probably know that "farang" means foreigner. In general this alone is not generally intended as a slur. But the phrase above literally means "foreign shit", so you will understand that this is not something one would want to be labelled.

Jai Dee:
This is literally "good heart". To illustrate, you will be considered to have a good heart if you buy everyone else in the beer bar a drink, or if you withdraw handfuls of money, giving it all to your girlfriend. As a general rule, if this expression is used about you, you are probably paying way too much money.

Jao Choo:
Literally means "playboy". It is used by bargirls to denounce men who bought them out and then are later seen taking out another girl. Such men are called "butterflies." The term is also a verb: "Why you say you love me but you ‘butterfly’ me?" Such action is usually tolerated if a man chooses a girl from a different bar, but can cause trouble if he takes another girl from the same bar. Needless to say, if a bargirl "butterflies," well, that is just business. If you butterfly a great deal, you might get to be labelled a "helicopter."

Japanese Only:
Following their reputation as high payers, there are many nightlife areas dedicated to Japanese only. Neither farangs, nor Thais tend to frequent these places. These bars/clubs have the reputation of having much higher than average prices, and the very best of the most beautiful women. Soi Thaniya near Patpong Road is a whole soi (lane) of bars for Japanese Only.

Kee niu:
Simply put, this means a skinflint or tightwad. If you do not buy the girl sitting beside you a drink, or refused to buy something gold and expensive for her birthday (months away), or you refused to give her alcoholic uncle cash for a new pickup truck which you knew he would blow on whiskey and gambling, you might well gain the reputation of a "kee niu".

Mama-san:
If you are going to frequent bars or clubs, then be wise and get to know the "mama-san" and buy her a drink or two. She knows what is really happening in the bar. She may have once been a bargirl herself. She is a good lady to have on your side if you are dead set on befriending a certain young lady or if there is trouble in the bar.

Mia noi:
This literally means "minor wife." Often Thai men who can afford it (and often those who can’t really) take a minor wife in addition to the first, referred to as "mia luang". A wealthy Thai man may have many mia nois and buy each an apartment and give each enough money to live well. He may visit them regularly or sometimes infrequently. Often, the main wife is aware of the existence of minor wives. Women who lived with American servicemen during the Vietnam War years were sometimes referred to as mia chao, "wives for rent."

Sai Sin:
You may notice a coloured piece of string on the wrist of the lady you are thinking of taking home. That was given to her most likely by a monk in a temple or by her father. It is for luck. And it obviously works because you are buying her drinks and dinner, aren’t you?
